The first is what the house is. A place built before central cooling existed, one built in the ducted years, and one built tight enough to need less than the equipment in it are three different conversations, and all three can stand on one street.

The second is the length of the heating season here. Where it runs half the year the furnace is the main system and the air conditioner is the second one; where winter is a few weeks, the equipment that fails is the half that sat unused since spring.

Whoever comes out, one thing is worth doing before the work starts: ask for the license number and the name it is held under, and check it. Some states license this trade, some leave it to the city, and some do not license it at all — and a trading name is frequently not the licensed entity.
