The second is the length of the heating season here. Where it runs half the year the furnace is the main system and the air conditioner is the second one; where winter is a few weeks, the equipment that fails is the half that sat unused since spring.

Whoever comes out, one thing is worth doing before work starts: ask for the license number and the name it is held under, and check it. Some states license the trade, some leave it to the city, and some do not license it at all — and a trading name is frequently not the licensed entity.

The license: Held by the contractor, not by this site, and issued where the work happens — Indiana licenses at state level, at city level or not at all depending on the trade and the town.
