The first is the house itself. A place built before central cooling existed, one built in the ducted years, and one built tight enough to need less than the equipment in it are three different conversations, and all three can stand on one street.

The second is the length of the heating season here. Where it runs half the year, heating is the main system and cooling the second; where winter is a few weeks, the equipment that fails is the half that sat unused since spring.

Whoever comes out, one thing is worth doing before work starts: ask for the license number and the name it is held under, and check it. Some states license this trade, some leave it to the city, and some do not license it at all — and a trading name is frequently not the licensed entity.

The license: Held by the contractor, not by this site, and issued where the work happens — Florida licenses at state level, at city level or not at all depending on the trade and the town. Ask for the number and the name it is held under: a trading name and the licensed entity are often not the same.
