The second is how long the heating season runs here. Where it runs half the year, heating is the main system and cooling the second; where winter is a few weeks, the equipment that fails is the half that sat unused since spring.

Whoever comes out, one thing is worth doing before work starts: ask for the license number and the name it is held under, then check it. Some states license this trade, some leave it to the city, and some do not license it at all — and a trading name is frequently not the licensed entity.
